Kim Caron (CANASA) & Neil Sutton (SP&T News)
Kim Caron, Executive Director, CANASA, joins Neil Sutton, Editor, SP&T News, for a conversation about the security industry, CANASA and what’s ahead.
Neil Sutton
Neil Sutton joined the SP&T News team in 2007, managing the publication’s digital presence as online editor. In 2011, he took over management of Annex Business Media’s security group portfolio as editor of Canadian Security, SP&T News, and French-language publication Securite Quebec. Neil currently oversees the editorial direction for all three brands, managing print publications, websites, social media, award programs, video content, podcasts, in-person events and now virtual events. A business media journalist for more than 20 years, Neil was previously the editor of ITBusiness.ca and holds an MA in journalism from Western University.
Kim Caron
Kim’s career in the security industry began from the ground up and quickly flourished. She advanced through a variety of leadership roles, including Central Station Manager, Director of Operations, and Director of Sales. Along the way, she gained a deep understanding of the industry’s challenges while celebrating key wins that have had a lasting impact. Her accomplishments include working with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) on alarm by-laws, advocating for technician licensing, and collaborating with numerous associations across Canada and the U.S.
Her longstanding commitment to CANASA is evident through her service on multiple boards at the chapter, regional, and national levels. She has held roles such as Director (local and national), Chair of the National Monitoring Committee, and National President for three years. Among her proudest achievements is being a recipient of the R.A. Henderson Award for outstanding contributions to the advancement of the industry.
Kim has also shared her expertise as a panelist on industry discussions about the future and its challenges, appeared as a guest on the SP&T podcast, and was honored with induction into the SP&T Hall of Fame.
As the Executive Director for CANASA, she remains a passionate spokesperson and dedicated contributor to the continued growth and success of the security industry.

Benefits of OSDP and RS-485 Wiring versus Wiegand Protocols
This session will provide an overview of the key differences between OSDP and traditional Wiegand communication in access control systems. It will explain how OSDP, using RS-485 wiring, offers significant advantages in security, reliability, scalability, and system management.
Topics will include encrypted communication, two-way device communication, longer wiring distances, multi-drop capabilities, easier troubleshooting, and why many modern access control systems are moving away from Wiegand. The session will also highlight practical considerations for installers, integrators, and end users planning new installations or upgrading existing systems.

Why Alarms and Cameras Are Not Enough to Protect You Nowadays
Traditional security systems such as alarms and cameras are designed to detect and record crime—not stop it. Cameras provide valuable evidence after an incident occurs, while alarms notify monitoring centers or police, who often arrive several minutes after a break-in has already taken place. Most thefts and smash-and-grab attacks are completed within minutes, allowing criminals to enter, steal valuable assets, and escape before help arrives. To truly protect a business, security measures must not only detect a threat but also actively prevent intruders from carrying out the crime.

Elliott Goldstein is a practicing lawyer and legal educator. Since 1981, he has written two books and over 120 magazine, newspaper, and journal articles on video evidence, including topics such as video surveillance. His book “Video Evidence: A Practitioner’s Manual” is considered Canada’s authoritative source on video and photographic evidence. For 13 years, Mr. Goldstein lectured at the Ontario Police College on the law pertaining to crime scene videography. For over 11 years, he served as a deputy judge of the Ontario Small Claims Court and ruled on cases involving video evidence. He has a long association with CANASA and has made numerous presentations at its various seminars and expos.
